Cities - CREATIVE INDUSTRIES IN TRADITIONAL INTERCULTURAL SPACES

Chamber of Commerce of Venice

Concept

Creative industries are defined as those that focus on creating and exploiting the products of intellectual property, such as music, books, films, and games, or providing business-to-business creative services, such as advertising, public relations and direct marketing. They sometimes overlap with aspects of tourism and sports (for instance, where live performances are included) and retail - for instance, businesses focussing on designing, making and selling items or pieces of art such as jewellery, haute couture, poetry books and other creative writing, or fine art since the value of such objects derives from a high degree of aesthetic originality.

Situation

The situation of CI in Venice province combines the concept of creativity with that of innovation, although, according to the definition, the creative sector involves only some economic fields.
We can observe three different patterns of CI in our territory: single inventors/creative artists, a considerable number of SMEs working in the specific sectors (design, cinema, software and communication) and which belong to local “districts” (industrial clusters): Artistic Glass of Murano, Footwear of Riviera del Brenta, Venetian Shipbuilding, Informatics and Advanced Technology, Meta-cluster of cultural goods. There are also two local SMEs incubators located right in the centre of the city: the ex-Herion and Venice Cube ex-Cnomv. There are also a lot of professional associations that deal with the creative sectors: architects, city planners, designer, communication consultants, industrial designers, journalists, press agents…

About

Venezia is the capital of the Veneto Region and is worldwide known thanks to its unique physical features: it is located on the East, in the Venetian Lagoon, with direct access to the Adriatico see.
The city centre itself has not a great extension and it is constituted by islands connected through a huge number of bridges and channels. The rest of the municipal area is located inshore (on the dry land) and it constitutes a great metropolitan and industrialized area devoted to shipbuilding and buildings with main centres in Mestre and Marghera.
The economy of the city centre is mainly based on tourism and the related enterprises (handicraft, artistic glass, fancy dress..), the economy of the province of Venice is based mainly on international and national commerce and transport enterprises, buildings, companies (mainly textile, metallurgic and food) and agriculture.
The economic environment is with no doubt very dynamic: there is an increasing number of innovative SMEs which are able to develop and promote the territory of the Province working of different creative sectors. The map of the creative industries below (by “Agenzia del Contemporaneo” www.aganziadelcontemporaneo.org and Fuoribiennale www.fuoribiennale.org) graphically shows the situation. The analysis underlines that Venice is part of the highest density of creativity and innovation area in the world.
Venice is considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world and UNESCO recognised it as world heritage, due to its natural, historic and artistic resources. Since IX century Venice has always being representing a pole of attraction not only for economic and trade activities but also for cultural and artistic ones. Venice was the homeland of artists as prominent as Goldoni, Vivaldi, Marco Polo, Giorgione, Canaletto, Tiepolo, Scarpa and Vedova. Venice is world famous for its cultural heritage and for being the seat of international events that attract a lot of tourists and persons involved in the work as Biennale and Venice Film Festival.
